History and Lore
Emerald has captivated civilizations for over 4,000 years. From Cleopatra’s legendary mines to Mughal emperors and modern haute joaillerie, it remains the symbol of rebirth, love, and divine insight. The name derives from the Greek smaragdos, meaning “green gem.”
Revered by ancient Egyptians, Persians, Incas, and Romans, it was said to embody rebirth, insight, and divine favor. Cleopatra’s passion for emerald was legendary — she even gifted visiting dignitaries carved emerald portraits of herself. Ancient Romans associated them with Venus, goddess of love, while medieval mystics used them to predict the future. Their color — soothing and harmonious — was thought to rest the eyes, leading 16th-century gem cutters to gaze into emeralds to relieve strain.
